A DAY AT CIRA - ITA "Village of the boys' Class 5A-Route-Aerospace Research Report class

UN GIORNO AL CIRA

Il giorno 26 Novembre ci siamo recati, accompagnati dalle professoresse D. Vannicola and V. Giunta, CIRA (Italian Aerospace Research Centre) to take part in the activity "Scientist for a Day", organized by the Science Centre "Science City" of Naples during the event "Futuro Remoto".

Upon arrival, we were greeted by engineer Nicoletta De Pascale, who has shown a video by the various plants found in the structure.

After seeing the presentation and raised several questions relating to it, we went to look in more detail:

1. the PWT (Plasma Wind Tunnel - Wind Tunnel Plasma)

Gallery hypersonic plasma capable of reproducing the environmental conditions of their re-entry of spacecraft into the atmosphere. The gallery can carry all types of evidence typical of the design and development of thermal protection systems for aerospace applications and is considered the largest and most advanced facility in the world.

2. the (IWT Icing Wind Tunnel - Wind Tunnel for Ice)

wind tunnel that simulates the conditions that you have around the aircraft in terms of presence of ice. The IWT is also used for the study of subsonic aerodynamic characteristics.

3. the plant LISA (Laboratory for impact with the ground of large aerospace structures)

system designed to test aerospace structures, in size up to a maximum weight of 20 tons, using high-energy impact tests on soil or water .

This system also allows you to perform tests of ditching and emergency landing on soft ground, thanks to a slide that can be accelerated to 30 m / s.

The tour has impressed us a lot, and also gave us an excellent impression on the research of the Centre. We have finally been able to implement the comparison theory-practice, being able to watch live all we had learned only from textbooks.

Also during the conference the engineer was able to respond satisfactorily to all our questions, explaining in a clear function of the various plants.

In particular, we hit the LISA system as it is a system that combines advanced technology with important implications in the field of security and protection of human lives aboard aerospace vehicles.
