Mazzini Institute Report II B Visit the tower Biological Institute Report

Tuesday, November 25, 2008, we boys of the class II B of the Higher Institute "G. Mazzini "in Naples we went to the tour at the Tower of Biological According to hospital.

We were welcomed by Professor. Aloi, professor of pathology, who spoke of the foundation DBPM (department of molecular and cell biology and pathology) and the National Council of IEO research, where about 400 researchers work in concert and we went on to explain what does the research: that collects and analyzes data in a systematic manner in order to understand the phenomena of interest and we also spoke of the research taking place in structure, in the fields of physiology, pharmacology, hygiene and Cellular and molecular biology. In particular, we study the various types of thyroid cancer and is seeking strategies for tackling the changes that produce the pathology. We were then invited to ask questions and we have expressed a desire to better understand some issues of great relevance, such as GMOs, their positive and negative effects on genetics, viruses such as AIDS and the progress of pharmacology in its care, we have also requested clarification on bioethics and the need to develop codes of conduct for scientists who manipulate the genome.

Following accompanied by a young graduate student in biotechnology we went to explore the laboratories building, where we had the opportunity to see various instruments, such as: electron microscopy and optical, the centrifuges that are used to accelerate separations between bodies with different densities through the use of centrifugal force, a seesaw, which serves to agitate the cultures of bacteria and cells, an amino acid sequence to analyze proteins.

Continuing the journey we arrived in a lab where you can find an analytical balance, precision tubes and puntoli and an ultra centrifuge used to separate the different parts of the cell.

We were also performed in another laboratory, in which there are several refrigerators containing bacteria cultures, placed in degrees less than -134 ° C, because they retain for a period of several years, while others, in the refrigerator at temperatures high as the most frequently used.

This new experience "scientists for a day" has aroused strong emotions in the whole class. Indeed, we have been able to "explore" all about the world of science knowledge-rich obtained through the observation and study of many researchers who have and continue to devote several years of their lives to research, done with passion and dedication, despite the limited recognition.

And it is their constant dedication and commitment of these researchers has meant that I am fascinated by this interesting and important subject, and for some of us, who knows that is not taken a spark that will guide us in our future studies ...
