REPORT CLASS VA - ISS MAZZINI-NAPLES - VISIT TO POLO SCIENCES

Monday, 'Nov. 24, according to the agreements made by our school with the City of Science, under the Remote Future survey 2008 - Itineraries science, we went at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of 'University of Naples Federico II, stationed in Monte Sant'Angelo, via Cintia.

Visiting laboratories gray and dusty, we met people "different" than usual, almost surprised by our visit, they were so immersed in their work, but talking about it more and more impassioned in telling the objectives of their research and the difficulties in the field trying to move too. The limits that we felt a glimpse of the organization of the course are not all that we have been able to really listen to the researchers, squeezed between desks, furniture, lamps, chairs ... Speaking of chairs, there were just a few ...! Eventually, after hours of laps on corridors and rooms, we sat down to rest on the stairs ... ... and reflect on our future. Many of us will attend college next year and maybe will turn to those same corridors with a different awareness!

Report-ISSG Mazzini G-V-complex Monte S. Angelo

On November 28, 2008 we, VG dell'ISSG Mazzini, we visited the university complex of Mount St. Angelo, via Cintia located. The aim of the visit was to make a first approach to the university world, and to receive some clarifications about the various faculties offered by the University Federico II.

The first part of the visit took place within a research office, where we have had discussions with a professor of astrophysics attitudes about our university and our doubts, the comparison has been very constructive and interesting because we have been given a complete overview of the university and how it changes the lifestyle of the student from high school to college. Later we went to a lab where we study and monitor the behavior of the system VIRGO: this is a Michelson interferometer with long arms 3 k m , located in the municipality of Cascina ( PI). The construction equipment was completed in 2003 . The project's aim is to reveal the gravitational waves in a wide range of observable frequencies between 10 Hz and 6000 . Such precision will see the effects of supernovae and binary systems located in ' Virgo cluster (hence the name of the project). The project uses a high precision laser prestabilizzato, this sends a laser beam that is split and sent in the two arms of the complex. The beams are bounced 50 times before being recombined to identify the differences.

We then went to another room in the laboratory, where we saw a demonstration on a small scale, the Michelson interferometer, using a laser source with monochromatic red light. The Michelson interferometer is the most common type of interferometer and is named after its inventor, Albert Abraham Michelson . A interference pattern is obtained by dividing routed on different paths and a beam of photons and doing it again converge. The two pathways must have different lengths, or may be different materials, so that it is a considerable lag in optical path of the beams divided. Of the two different light beams (equally likely paths for the single photon) is a reflection by the semi-reflective mirror , arrives on a mirror at the top, from which it is reflected and, through the semi-reflective mirror, she meets the detector. The second beam passes through the mirror first instead of mirrors, and is subsequently reflected in the detector. Two other beams do not converge on the detector, and are therefore not taken into account. If the paths differ by integers wavelengths , the ' constructive interference generates a strong output signal. For difference equal to an odd number of half-lengths wavelength, the interference is destructive and the signal is close to zero.

In conclusion, we would like to sincerely thank all staff who accompanied us during the visit, especially the professor with whom we have had the initial discussion about the academic orientation, which proved to be certainly more constructive conversations that usually you can get. Demonstrations also were particularly exciting because the interaction between our technicians and students.

Report-ISSG Mazzini-V GC.IRCE

On November 21, 2008 we, VG dell'ISSG Mazzini of Naples, we visited the Laboratory for Particle Physics CNR - INNOVA S. Nicola la Strada (Caserta). During the visit they were shown the basic elements of the methodologies used and the purpose of the analysis carried out in their respective fields of application. The problem, in fact, is to identify ions 14 C compared to other atomic species and molecular mass close. Although these contaminants are present in trace in the sample, they will in any case many orders of magnitude more abundant isotope rare. This raises the problem with high efficiency to eliminate the interference by a dispersive analysis. AMS systems this is achieved by ion beam to be in its path from the source to the detector end, a series of deflection by electric and magnetic fields that make up "filters" the combination of which results in a unique selective sensitivity . It 's so you can identify and count individually, in the final revelation, the atoms of 14 C in the sample and therefore its abundance compared stable isotope, which provides a measure of the age of the find. These characteristics make the AMS a very powerful investigative tool available to scholars of past environment in which man lived, his activities and interactions between different civilizations. In addition, the emission of large quantities of 14 C, which took place in the late '50s and early '60s because of the experiments of nuclear explosions in the atmosphere (bomb spike) provided a temporal marker that can be used to eliminate the error of dating derived precisely from this higher concentration of 14 C in the atmosphere. Also introduced were the founding principles of the method of radiocarbon dating, the particular features and advantages of the variant method with conventional accelerator compared to the radiometric method, the types of artifacts and dating age ranges, the possibility of extending the measures to other rare isotopes. Were some examples of archaeological investigations of special interest and environmental issues concerning the carbon cycle. The dating of objects of various kinds between the ages of 0 and 50,000 years can be made using the radiocarbon method, provided that it contains carbon of organic origin, as is the case for coal, wood, textiles, bones, paleo soils, etc. . The naturally occurring carbon consists of two stable isotopes (the 12 C for 98.9% and 13 C for 1, 1%), and a radioactive, the 14 C, which has an average life of 8266 years and an abundance of less than one part in 1012. The carbon contained in all living organisms in the terrestrial biosphere, due to exchange processes that characterize the life cycle of the cell (photosynthesis and metabolism of plants and animals), the same carbon isotopic composition of atmospheric carbon dioxide. The 14 C radioactive binds to atmospheric oxygen forming a molecule of 14 CO 2 ; studies on large-scale circulation of the atmosphere have shown that they are just a few years because the carbon dioxide thus produced is perfectly mixed with one containing the other isotope of carbon, so that the isotopic ratio of 14 C / 12 C of atmospheric carbon dioxide is independent of latitude, longitude and altitude considered. It 'so clear as the measure of the rate of decay (radiometric method) or relative abundance (mass spectrometry) in a current exhibit, you can get the time elapsed from the event in question. The visit in question turned out to be very interesting because it allowed us to touch certain aspects of a subject which at times can prove to be almost exclusively theoretical and abstract if studied from textbooks in addition, there is piaciuto conoscere l’utilizzo che ha lo studio delle particelle nella vita quotidiana: si pensi, ad esempio, all’esame che viene effettuato su diversi tipi di acqua e vini per verificare la quantità di 13 C presente al fine di ottenere informazioni precise sulla provenienza e sull’età, evitando quindi contraffazioni.

Distinguish Between Hypothermia And Hyperthermia?

Report-ISSG Mazzini G-V-CIRA

Il giorno mercoledì 26 novembre 2008 noi, classe V G, ci siamo recati presso Capua a visitare il Centro Italiano di Ricerca Aerospaziale (CIRA). The housing and the laboratories of the center are located approximately 50 km north of Naples near the city of Capua, the area chosen for the high concentration of aerospace companies and the establishment of two universities, Frederick II and the Second University of Naples, courses in aerospace engineering. The center covers an area of \u200b\u200b600.000m ² area that, in addition to house staff offices, houses several laboratories where scientific experiments are carried out. CIRA is one of the few aerospace research centers in the world to have both of the laboratories of land laboratories whose synergy allows flight, thanks to the theoretical numerical laboratories to initiate scientific projects highly technological and innovative development in line until the marketing stage. Thanks to these features, as well as the capabilities of the staff who work there, make it the center is very important not only from a national point of view but also internationally. In particular, we visited the laboratories of land in the tree.

usually the second phase of a project consists of testing the validity under controlled environmental conditions can be obtained only in special laboratories on the ground. Here projects are tested under the particular conditions determined from time to time according to the characteristics of the project. Very often, this requires extreme conditions to which the project suffers severe stress of a different nature, stress that, their very nature, would be difficult to obtain in a non-artificial, and, however, never adjusted or managed with the same ease and precision of a laboratory on land. Many of the laboratories of the earth Cira are unique in size or capacity to use and are often used for projects with highly developed countries in the aerospace field, despite their skills and resources, rely on this center to make experiments unfeasible in any Another research center in the world.

Icing Wind Tunnel (IWT): here are the experiments that simulate the low temperatures of higher altitudes of the troposphere and the conditions for the formation of ice on aircraft lifting surfaces all'interno delle nubi.
